Italian Style Pale Lager | 5.1%
An Italian inspired pale lager we brewed specifically for Bucky’s. From our earliest conversations, the idea was to create a lager that felt at home at Bucky’s. Something with enough character to stand alongside their food, but crisp, refreshing and incredibly easy to drink with pizza and the other grubs on the menu. As the project evolved, so did the exact style, ultimately landing on our take on an Italian Pale Lager. Bright and snappy, with a dry finish, expressive European hops and just enough bitterness to cut through a slice and reset the palate for the next bite.
The beer is built around locally grown and malted Rabbit Hill Avalon Pilsner malt, giving us a really nice connection to New Jersey agriculture and a flavorful foundation beneath an otherwise bright, lean lager. We also used a touch of flaked corn to lighten the body and sharpen the finish.
For the hops, we chose Strisselspalt and Triskel, two French varieties that we approached almost like seasoning food. Rather than making the beer overtly “hoppy,” they bring subtle floral, herbal, citrus and lightly spicy aromatics that complement the food without competing with it. A firm but clean bitterness helps cut through cheese, olive oil, keeping the palate fresh and ready for the next bite of something delicious.
More than anything, we were excited to make something with Bucky’s because we really admire what they’ve built. We fondly remember their first humble pop-up in our packing lot and the birth of their Detroit square that one fateful unseasonably cold fall Saturday 😜. They care deeply about their craft, their ingredients and the experience around their food. There’s a lot of natural overlap in how we both approach what we make, and we were really happy to have the opportunity to create something together.
